Well, everything depends on what country are we talking about. In some monarchy republics they are the main power which rule the country (Brunei for example). If we're talking about Britain (which has Constitutional monarchy) then you're absolutely right. Actually they are just the symbols which can't be forgotten because of traditions. Personally I think that it is stupid to have a queen in 2006. But some British people are sure that there is no need to change their political system because it will lead to big changes in their lives. They are sure that finance that are given to queen won't harm the economical system.

The Queen does not have direct rule over the country like most people believe. The Queen is similar to the President of the United States in the sense that the Queen has the power to influence.
The prince doesn't do anything significant until he is king.

I guess it depends on which country you're talking about, some have actual roles in the government...but for the most part they are figureheads. What does Prince Charles actually do? Many are involved in their philanthropy, many more just soak up the sun in St. Tropez. Some pay Hollywood movie stars to come to their B-day parties.
