Car just had its 96000 mile service. Its a 1.9 HDI Rapier 2000.

Mechanic reported work that still needs attention. It is as follows:

"Tensioner and roller visually ok but should be replaced to gurantee. Needs new P/S & AC belt. Middle exhaust pipe broken at back box. Requires new back box and centre pipe."

I have no idea what that all means - apart from exhaust problem. How important are the other reported faults to fix? How much will they cost roughly? Can an average tyre and exhaust centre fix the exhaust prob and if so roughly how much will that cost.

Thanks

The P/S & AC belt is the belt that drives the pumps for your power steering and air-conditioning. If it fails these will stop working, and non-working P/S will leave the car undriveable.

The tensioner and roller are used to keep one of the engine's drive belts tight. If they fail, then the belt will not drive whatever it is supposed to.
If its the tensioner and roller for the P/S & AC belt these will stop working, just as if the belt had failed (as above).
If its the tensioner for the cam-belt, and it fails, then the camshafts will get out of sync with the crankshaft, which will cause the valves and pistons to get out of sync, causing severe internal damage to your engine - you'll need a new engine if that happens.

Any tyre and exhaust place will be able to fix the exhaust problem - phone around for quotes for a new centre pipe and back box.

The tensioner and roller will be for one of the belts. Possibly the cambelt if that was changed this time around, although they could be for either the alternator belt or the PS/AC belt. You need to ask him which he was refering too. Any decent tyre and exhaust place can fit a new back box and centre pipe.

No idea about costs i'm afraid. If the tensioner and roller are for the cambelt then it is quite important since if they fail and the belt slips you could damage the engine.

its the garage way of covering their **** and telling you to get your cambelt changed.
take it to a small garage they should do the belt and exhaust for a fraction of what the dealer will charge.
