Don't bother trying to hide anything.

EVERYTHING you do on a work computer is fair game for your employer. If you use their computer, they have a right to look at everything you write, no matter what the format.

You can get fired not only for WHAT you write, but just for the fact that you are using an employer's computer for personal reasons.

Do yourself a big favor and save the IM's and emails for home. It could cost you your job and/or be potentially very humiliating.

I had a friend who had a co-worker get access to her personal stuff online. The co-worker was a vindtictive troublemaker who sent my friend's private (and very personal) emails to everybody in the company. The boss didn't even get the chance to fire my friend - she had quit out of huge embarrassment.

Why risk it?

You can go on and use the clean up utility, but if they really want to know if you are on line needlessly or if you are using messenger when you aren't allowed to, then they have ways of finding out. All it takes is just some time and anyone can see everything you have done since you started working for them.
But, why do you want to hide it from them? Is it b/c you aren't supposed to be on it? If that is so, then there is a reason or several for that. They could have sensitive information on that computer, or the server that it is connected to (if there is one) and don't want hackers looking at confidential information. They could be afraid that if you are on messenger that a virus could infect the computer. Or, they could just want to make sure that they are getting what they are paying for, an honest days work. And believe me being on line chatting with friends all day at work, or even occasionally is not what they pay you for.
