I understood that once you have itunes on a computer you can import songs to your ipod even if your library is not on that computer.I know people who have done this. When I try that it says my ipod is synchd to another library and will only give me the option of wiping my ipod and starting again.what's up with that?

If possible, you can set up your ipod so that it is manually updates. that way when you sync it with another computer, you can add on the songs you want by yourself without wiping it clean.

The iTunes you are trying to hook up to is what you need to change. You need to click on the item "manually import songs" or something like that ... before you hook your iPod up to the computer.
