They're playing for time whilst trying desperately to either think of something funny to say or get themselves out of an awkward situation...
Either way they would just be better off asking for you to either share the joke or shut up because you are disrupting their lesson.

Since it's funny, Im sure they want you to share it with the class. Perhaps they are trying to convey something serious and you burst out laughing. I do that all the time

Yep, good point... teachers are ***holes... there are several of my old teachers I would like to track down and put a bullet in their head...

maybe they are as bored as the students and looking for a good laugh or maybe they don't want anyone to have fun at school!
