I think it's a good idea for older kids to be exposed to foreign languages - and cultures. And I would allow the kids to choose from the available languages at the school.

Our local high school offers 13 languages - more than average - most offer at least three.

It would be pretty difficult to allow a totally free choice of languages, wouldn't it? You would need several hundred language teachers per school.

I think schools should expand their choice of languages to include languages like Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and Russian. Apart from the fact that it reflects the modern world we live in, I think it would re-energise kids and make them more interested and therefore, more successful in learning languages. Who wants to learn French and German? It's just not interesting for most kids.

I think foreign languages should be taught, but it's impossible to teach any possible language. For one thing, how does the school afford that many teachers? I think that if you have your choice from 3 or more languages, you're pretty lucky.

I think they should teach a second language at primary school rather than waiting until secondary.
You should be given a number of languages to choose from too.....

The fact is I really wanted to learn Spanish but we all had to learn french or nothing. I think it's alot more about them not having enough resources and teachers. Also it's alot easier to teach all of the kids one language rather then all of them having to learn different ones. It depends whether your school is really privileged.

We had to do French and German, we had no selection. If I had have been given the alternative, with hindsight, i could have needed to income some thing like extra thrilling, like jap. My young ones are being taught languages in generic college. in one year a million my youngest is gaining awareness of little bits of Mandarin and in one year 3 the older one is gaining awareness of Spanish. i think of that's extra effective to start in generic college, youthful young ones are extra receptive to new issues than youngsters.

I had to take French (late 60's early 70's). We had no choice and I hated it, yet at the time you could leave school at 15 but I decided to do O levels. Then I could choose my subjects. I dropped French, science and maths! Even now I don't regret 'dropping' these subjects.

I think all they ever offered was French and Spanish; your choice. What other language would you be interested in?
