Arteries don't have valves. I don't believe the **** that some are writing here. The heart has valves. And veins have valves. These prevent backflow.
In the arteries, the heart pumping stops it flowing back.

Veins have valves inside them to prevent back flow of blood. This coupled with your heart pumping, it creates the blood pressure that pushes blood through all the vessels. While standing and on your feet, there is a small collection of vessels in the arch of your foot that assists the return of venous blood back up the legs.

All arteries and Veins etc that carry the blood around the body have one way and two way valves preventing back flow.

The other part of the answer to the veins ( and lymphatics ) have valves response is that movement of the voluntary muscles pushes the fluids back. That's why swelling occurs & people feel tired when they sit (as in a plane) for a long time without moving much - nothing has been moving the fluids back, & they start to accumulate in the legs & feet.

Its a couple of years since I did Biology, but as far as I can remember, in veins there are valves, which stop blood flowing back down instead of going back to the heart.

well there are only valves in the heart that i know of,
the blood does flow to the bottom to a degree, you only have to stand on your head for a few minutes to feel that.
but the bodies blood system is a closed hydrolic system, meaning that it doesnt have to stop it as the blood pressure will keep it circulating around.

It is not prevented from flowing anywhere. if it did that part would die and have to be amputated.
BTW There are no valves in arteries because they are high pressure but veins are one way back to the heart.with check valves.

i tink is that the valves in the heart, the left of the heart is more muscular and every pump means more pressure, and maybe, the different pressure from the diff artery and vein will create a balance???
