I'm a volunteer at a nursing home. How can I develop a relationship with my assigned partner?

I agree with BarBqer, just to add to it you can always take sugar free candy in and ask them if they want some, with the elderly ladies you can ask them if they would like for you to put nail polish on. You can read to them, help them write letters, find out what they like to do such as playing cards; checkers; domino's....etc. Talk with the activities dept or the CNA's to get a good feel of how they are, their likes and dislikes.

The best way to get to know someone is to ask them questions and let them talk about themselves. With the elderly, they seem to remember long-ago events better than recent ones, so I would suggest asking about things from their youth first. For example:

"What was your favorite holiday tradition when you were a kid?"
"How long did it take you to learn to ride a bycicle?"
"Did you like school?"
"Tell me about your first car"
"Who was your favorite movie star?"
"Have you ever traveled to another country?"

That should get you started.
