It seems that the "Oh, you are white and African?" response is mostly from folks who haven't had an opportunity to travel much and hold many pre-conceived notions about a good number of things! One of the funnier things said:

[Black American] So where are you from??

[Me] South Africa.

[American] But you look white to me!

[Me] I am white.

[American] Ok but don't you have a black family or something? I mean, black people come from Africa.

[Me] So do some white people, too.

[American] No way, you must be black or something, right?

[Me] No, there have been whites living and rearing families in Africa since the 1600's, possibly even longer.

[American] Oh. Well, then you're a white person who lived in Africa.

[Me] No, I'm an African.

[American] No way! See, my people are from Africa, so I'm African-American.

[Me] No, you're an American. If that were the case, I'd be an American-African, then, wouldn't I?

That topic abruptly ended there....LOL

unhappy and sorry to declare this yet i'd suggestion any white human beings to no longer come to south africa, you would be focused by black human beings and getting a job in case you're white and male is plenty harder than ever in the previous. So in case you're white stay out of south africa. the international and the ANC does no longer admit it yet yet a opposite apartheid is busy occurring in south africa. all of the rights is taken far flung from the white human beings, to get a bursary to income is rather out of the question in basic terms black human beings get it. Eskom, is in basic terms employeeing black human beings, the police and the army needs white human beings, however the white human beings in no way gets promoted (have been given family members in the two)

Don't worry guys, the effects of apartheid were not only to blacks. I once wrote an article at my university about the unforeseen effects of the system . I mentioned that prejudice and my tutor got me wrong . I have shown her your question and the tutor now understands. The Rhodesians suffered the same fate when they migrated to Australia and they didn't like the fact that they were referred to as Africans. The South Africans at least they love to be called Africans but they have to live with the after effects and ignorance of 400 years of apartheid .(that they are Blacks - How come you are white )

I live in Taiwan (where South Africans are the second biggest foreign, read "white", group). Not only does one get the "but you're white" stuff, but before they get there they first assume you're American (the fourth biggest foreign group in Taiwan). Then they follow it up with "But you're white" and then put the cherry on top of their ignorance with "Which country in South Africa?".

I'm living in London (blond haired green eyed girl)
On one or two occasions, while talking to European housemates, or people from work etc, I mentioned my Mom is Austrian, but my Dad is an Afrikaner, after a while I found out, no one knew what an Afrikaner is, and that everybody was assuming my Dad is black, and when I asked them what made them think that, almost all of them replied, but surely if he was born in Africa, he cant be white?
Idiots.

It's been a real eye-opener at times, when I've been on chat-sites. The ignorance of some individuals is mind boggling.

"But how can you be on the 'net, you don't have computers..."
"Are there tigers walking in the streets?..." (Wrong continent idiot!)
"Are you Black?"...
"Do you live in mud huts?..."

These are just a few examples, I've come across! Americans seem to be the most naive, uneducated nation, from what I've experienced.

I am done being insulted by comments like these. The just show how ignorant and narrow minded people are...and if they are willing to show it then we can't stop it. One almost wants to pity them for the extent of their ignorance...

It is ignorant for two reasons. Firstly (and most obviously) there are not only black people in South Africa and secondly...there is nothing wrong with a multi-racial relationship as long as both parties are in it for the right reasons...

When my friend and I travelled through Vietnam and then Russia, she got the same! People thought we were Swedes, because obviously she can't be South African (she is white) and there are people of colour in Sweden. huh!? Have no idea where they got that from, but anyway... She used to get VERY angry about it.

The rest of the world should rather stop watching Tarzan & Jane movies, and rather come and see what South Africa is all about.
