Difficult to answer. Islam doesn't have a great deal of tolerance for non-believers and their remedy to conversion is subject to whom is answering the question about violence. But the Christian religion has had some very violent periods too. The Crusades, conquest of the Latin American civilizations, etc. all in the name of religious conversion. The entire Inca library was burnt because a priest considered it heresy.
There is a long history of violence in the middle east arena, about 5000 years worth. Foreign invaders and powerful local kings wanting to control all the region have contributed to its violent history. In reality, religion seems to be a part of the justification for war but the real bottom line has always been control and power. Power for the invaders or king.
If Islam is truly a religion of peace, then its presence in the middle east shouldn't add to violence and should be justification for peace. When presented with the opportunity to live in peace, it seems that religious factions in Iraqi have elected to fight each other. Why? They're all Muslims.

As the Pope indicated, Islam was a violent non-peaceful religion from the get-go. Therefore your question has good grounds. However, what kind of a society would exist if Islam had never been born.
Prior to Mohamed (the founder of Islam) there were many different Arab tribes all fighting each other.
If that would have remained the Status Quo to this day, the West woul be in a much better position.
Because if they are in relatively small groups, all killing each other, then they can't form a united front against the West.
"Divide and Conquer".

Wow, you are IGNORANT. Do the world a favour and get your tubes tied, we need less stupid people in this world. Islam is a more peaceful religion than christianity. Why don't you get off the computer, go out and actually talk to someone so you can have a more educated opinion on the world.
And for your information, it's just people who misinterpreted the Quran that does the violence. Christianity has the same factions. Can you say "IRA?"

It would be more peaceful if outside governments and religions did not try to change them. It would also be peaceful if there was not so much innovation in the different religious sects.

Well, it certainly could not get any more senselessly violent than it is with Islam.
And what's this bogus crap about Christianity being violent? If you look in the Bible, it is very much against violence, so blaming Christianity for peoples' failure to follow Christian principles is quite intellectually dishonest and shallow. Especially considering how little of the violence is even credited to Christianity per se.
But a nutjob jihadist would find plenty of support for his barbarous butchery in the Koran.
This is the difference. And it is significant.
