As the Romans said, In Vino Veritas: a drunken person says *exactly* what he thinks.
And, his apology was convincing because, after all, he IS an actor!

I'm actually a big fan of Mel Gibson especially after his movie "The Passion". Alcoholism is truly a disease and not understood enough by those who it doesn't affect. It's very challenging and truly an addiction. I agree that when you're drunk you say things you don't mean and that these things do come from somewhere, whether it be fear, anger or whatever. The problem is that celebs are ALWAYS in the public eye for better or worse and the tabloids will invent stories. How many times have we heard celebs doing stupid things? Don't we all do stupid things? I personally say KUDOS to him for being strong enough to speak out about it. Most celebs just let the tabloids have a field day and say "whatever". Ever since his movie "The Passion" he's been scrutinized for being so controversial. People will use this incident to herald or bash him on their personal opinions, not necessarily for this one particular incident. I do believe it will affect his career which is unfortunate, but that's hollywood! We love them and hate them at the drop of a hat!

I love Mel Gibson. That doesnt mean that I agree with what he said. I think that everyone has said and done some very questionable and idiotic things when intoxicated and afterwards, you get up, brush yourself off and move along. In my eyes he completely redeemed himself with one little question that he asked a female police officer. "What do you think you're lookin' at sugar ****?" was enough of a comedic statement to prove that he indeed had too much to drink and also showed that Mel is Mel. If you have read anything about Mel Gibson or have heard what co stars have said about him, it is that he is a jokester and a prankster and an all around funny guy. I have liked Mel for years before this incident and I will continue to like Mel for years to come. He could shave his head bald and name himself ******** and I would still be infatuated with him.

Unfortunately, I don't think it will hurt his career.
I believe that what he said while drunk was probably his true feelings.
He was so drunk he didn't know what he was saying, but he still managed to think about his mug shot and make attepts to freshen up so he wouldn't do the Nick Nolte look?
I don't think you get to have it both ways.
As a Jew, it is hard for me to be objective. While I don't necessarily believe his apology, I hope that he was sincere - even if only sincere that hate-laden vitriol shouldn't be spewed for the world to see.
Actors are human beings. They have flaws and foibles. I USUALLY don't hold it against them, however, somethings are unforgiveable.
Russell Crowe throwing a phone - forgiveable
the Dixie Chicks dissing the pres - forgiveable
Woody Allen sleeping with his adopted daughter - unforgiveable
Tom Cruise calling the U.S. a sad and terrifying place that he wouldn't raise his children in (said in 2001) - unforgiveable
Mel Gibson's rant? - unforgiveable until I see acts of contrition

Anyone can have a drunken outburst but to humbly appologize is
the Manly thing to do so I don't think it will affect his career. He
got a lot of negative criticism for "The Passion" but it was a good
movie and he survived that.

I think he meant it. I'm a little conflicted about what it should mean. He deserves to get paid for this talent but I don't know that I personally will pay because he's broken the illusion -- I now think of him as "that guy". I I want to spend money to watch the guy that thinks I'm ruining the world.

I liked Mel Gibson. I don't know what I think of him now. I don't understand enough about him or his problems to comprehend what made him say such slurs!

I think he was drunk and said what his disabled mind wanted him to say. Alcohol is just like a drug it makes do stupid things at the wrong times. Should it affect how he is treated? No. He said he was sorry now let the man move on and move forward.

who really cares? The only reason this story/incident is news is because he's a celebrity. I doubt he's the first person to commit the alleged accusations... so why give him all the attention?
