Yes! I can't bear to part with any of my books. I've already gotten a second bookcase (actually it's an old file cabinet) and it's half full of books that I already had but didn't have anywhere to put. When I read something, whatever is going is on in my life is later associated with the book, and rereading it reminds of that time. It almost seems like getting rid of my books would be like getting rid of my memories.
Although it *is* nice to read a brand new book, there's something to be said for reading a book with history, something old and dog-eared from a library or a second hand shop.

yes... I'm the only person in my house that LOVES to read and even though they have bookcases in all the rooms, mine is filled up and I have no where to put all my books. At first everyone was like you read them 3-4 times already, so give them up... But I feel like they are all a part of me while I'm growing up and I would like to keep them all.... Now my book collection is so big that I can start my own library... And it's not an exaggeration.

I only keep the books I purchase by Nicolas Sparks. Any other book I purchase gets passed on from one family member to another. I have 3 bookcases in my home. One for the kids, one is a movie rack and the other for my items. All of them are only the small 3 shelf ones. Keeping some books, like reference ones or classics are acceptable to me, but when someone keeps EVERYTHING they read, that gets a bit over the top.

Oh yes. I am the definition of bibliophile. I love to read and collect books, be they new or used. My collection is currently about 3000 and still growing. And that includes about 500 boxed since I don't have the room for them. I wish I could add more bookcases, but just don't have the space.

This is exactly the way I feel. I have moved twice in two years and of all the things I threw away or gave away my books are still here. The idea of a book exchange is great BUT I want my books back. I buy those books because they are good books and want to keep them. A library won't do because you can't keep them.(not to mention all the people licking there fingers to turn the pages) YUCK just kidding. SORT OF.
Gotta Love Books. Great Question!

I have been that way for years, once I read a story my mind assumes I now own it (esp if I enjoyed it). I had to stop going to our public libary because of it, I never wanted to return the books...lol The only solution I have found is to trade books in at our local bookstore for store credit, but I only trade in the books that I had deemed bland. By the way; I have put in recessed bookcases in my living room and family room.

yes. But my husband is the bigger hoarder. I think is hoping one day we will have a home big enough that we can have one room entirely dedicated to a library. We have talked about getting rid of some of the books, and the idea just pains him. He said it's like giving away a child.
And now with our kids, I am constantly bringing home childrens books, we now need a 2 full bookshelves just for the kids books.

Sounds like a problem I suffer from. There are several ways to solve this problem 1) get a bigger house 2) be hard on yourself and pack some off to a charity shop 3)or you can join www.bookcrossing.com here you can register your books, arrange to lend them out through book rings or book rays, you can send them to people who really want to read them, you can release them in the wild and see where they and up, you can also borrow books. Its all free, and what is really great is that the individual reference number on each book enables everyone who uses your book to find out where it has been and where it is heading next. Check it out, you don't have to join, but it is certainly worth a look. Personally I love it!

Yes, so true. I try to get around it by getting books from the library, loaning/giving some of my books to friends, etc. It works for about six months, then library has another "paperbacks for 25 cents" sale and I'm back where I started.

There's this miraculous place called the library. And it's...free. If you have so many books that you can't store them all, why not donate some of your lesser favorites. That way you're encouraging others to enjoy your passion and there's a place for them if you ever want to read them again.
This works for DVD's and other media as well.
Hoarding doesn't equal happiness.
