Religion in most countries isn't as much of a problem as it was in Russia, or the world in general especially at the time that Marx (who wanted to get rid of religion entirely) was writing. However when religion interferes in politics bad things tend to happen, and this is exactly what the revolutionaries saw in France - and seperated church and state. Britain has done a similar thing, but through different methods. Although the church is still officially very very strongly intertwined with religion (the head of the 'official' religion is also the head of state, pretty much making Britain a theocracy - on paper) religion plays very little part in politics. Most prime ministers don't play religion as a card during campaigning, or even mention it at all. Blair got a lot of criticism for introducing his faith into some speeches.
Religion interfering in politics is much more obvious in the US - the bible belt is a core voter base for any republican, meaning they base their policies on the views of these people - and essentially the same views of the Bible. The views of the Qur'an are viewed as backward and barbaric, but the (very similar) views of the Bible are presented as enlightened and civilised, and to me this stinks of hypocrasy.
However, no matter how bad it may get in the US (for instance teaching creationism) it couldn't be as bad as the church owning VAST swathes of Europe, dictating precisely what goes on, from politics to art to research, like it was (especially in Eastern Europe and Russia) when Marx was writing - at least it couldn't be as bad as that in the West. The middle east is another matter however.
For instance in Iran religion is an immense part of politics. Iran recently stopped using daylight savings time because it 'interfered' with the times of prayer - something which completely goes against common sense (as if you wanted an exact time you'd have to use solar time; a sundial, because the time isn't the same all over the country, and you'd always be out by a fraction, until it was a leap year), all in the name of religion. When religion has that much influence that it introduces nonsensical policies to political debate then you have a serious problem.
There is no specific problem with Islam - ANY religion can be made extreme like Islam is now. Christianity now is apparently peaceful, but previously it was incredibly violent, converting 'heathens' by the sword, enslaving them, pillaging their countries and stealing their wealth. Many US citizens in the 19th century wanted the death of every native American, and wanted them removed from 'their' new world. If that doesn't sound like what Bin Laden and others say then I don't know what does. The problem with Iran (or any religious country) is NOT Islam, or Islam's teachings - it is taking the religion of the country and making it the country itself - which is essentially nationalism, one step from facism.
