my personal opinion is that we dream so that we sleep longer and give the body some rest. because if we didn't dream, sleep would be really boring and then we'd wake up too soon and be tired!!! :-)

however scientifically speaking, dreams are important because it's the way the brain sifts through information.. putting it into order and throwing away the garbage. and to reinforce learning that went on in the day. studies have shown that ppl who studied information and then took a nap were able to better recall info on a test. so before you do the project, get some sleep!!! :-)

We dream during the REM (rapid eye movement) of the sleep cycle, which lasts for about 15 mins. Dreams occur in real time. For example if you have a dream that you are taking a walk that lasted 5 mins it actually did last 5 mins. In the past, people thought we dreamed actions as if they occured faster, but that has been disproven.

Dreams are the effect of our brains' trying to organise all the new information we've picked up during the day, and slot it into place with all the other information we've learned. Sometimes it's our brains' way of telling us something (from our subconscious to our conscious - if we remember the dream when we wake up!), whether it be a worry or problem in the mind or in our lives that we need to deal with, or something we need to remember to do. Nightmares tend to occur when we're stressed about something, and need to deal with it (either the stress itself is the problem, or what's causing the stress). Very strange dreams could be down to our bodies' reaction to something physical (what we've eaten or drunk, or medication we've taken) or could just be the brain trying to organise new ideas and information.

dreaming is the body's way of closing loops of stories begun during the day. say you took interest in the new boy (or girl?) at school, and got to talk to him/her today. you may dream about it later as your mind tries to close this loop begun for closure with the situation. dreams occur during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, and are about 15 minutes at a time. we dream up to 8 times (sometimes more) a night! but we can rarely remember them all except for one. dreams are your mind trying to end your day favorably. good luck! :)
