you will be aware of the three shell game ,find the pea, substitute shell for cup/mug and you have the origin put farthing or low value coin under the mug and you are hooked in, believe it was a naval game of the 1450 era cards were banned from all ships from 1510 onwards even today games of chance are frowned upon on board a ship at sea. you never won the farthing only lost the guinea trying to find it, hence the mugs game.
