You'll have a fab trip!!

Get a ticket for the Baz Bus and then you can hop on and off where ever you want.

In Cape Town don't miss:
Table Mountain
Cape Peninsular - Boulders Beach/Cape Point/Simons Town
V&A Waterfront
Robben Island
Winelands tour

From Cape Town (apologies if these are in the wrong order - check them on a map ...) I'd do ...
HERMANUS
GEORGE to KYSNA (Garden Route) on the Outeniqua Choo Choo
PORT ELIZABETH - go on a trip to the Addo Elephant Park, Township Tour, walk the Donkin Trail
EAST LONDON - if you can stay at the Sugar Shack Backpackers (it's near enough on the beach and you can watch the Dolphins playing in the indian ocean from the roof - gorgeous!!), go on a horse back safari (hope you see more animals than I did though when I did it!), go on a township tour.
DURBAN - when you get to Durban take the bus tour around the city (I got it from outside the aquarium), if you can go up into the Drakensburg to either Ampitheatre or Champagne Castle or follow Michael Caines footsteps to Roukes Drift!

when you first get to South Africa try and get a copy of the Coast to Coast book in the hostel. It's a free guide of where to go and what to do and it'll give you so many more ideas.

Hope you have a great trip - wish I was going there again!

Everyone has mentioned Cape Town and the Garden Route which are fantastic and I wouldn't deny that you need to go there but on your way to Durban don't forget to stop at The Golden Gate Nature Reserve where the country side changes dramatically and the differences are great to see.

Also while Durban is fun and warm in winter, being sub-tropical it gets really hot and humid in Summer and I would allow time to head for the Hills (the Drakensburg Mountains) while you are in Kawazulu Natal.
