I.e, I don't want to damage the tile, so where is the best place to drill it to avoid cracks etc..

Use a carbide-tipped masonry drill bit, place masking tape over the area first, and practice on a piece of scrap tile first.

Even if you drill through the grout you can create a mess, as it will tend to crack and come out in chunks - at which point you have a grout repair problem on your hands.

Obviously drilling through the grout is your best choice, but if you have to drill through a tile, drill with the least amount of pressure until you have gone through, this will eliminate any chance of breaking the tile!

depends on if your tile is ceramic or porcelian. if its ceramic, i would only drill if you absolutely have to if its porcelian use a diamond bit whole saw. carbide . drill slow and put a little water on the tile. slow is the main part of that. trust me i work at a tile store. go sloooooooooooooooooow

The option you present, is of course the Grout, best if you make a small pilot hole in either case,
