As the story was being written in his head, George found the middle of the story to be more exciting and marketable.
So the first broad story he wrote encompassed most of the 6 movies, but it was very vague. He then went on to clearify things up for the middle episode (A New Hope) as he felt it was the best story.
Only after the story had unfolded from the middle out and got rave reviews did he get his chance to create the slower Episode 1, followed by the more exciting Episodes II and III.
Episode 1 blows - he is very lucky he did not start there. The entire story is too graphically dependant, and lacks the thrust the Episode IV did. I believe if he had started with I, the whole series would have flopped.
Plus, by starting with 4, he creates extra hype and free press - like what we're doing now.
I suppose you could start from the begining, but Episode 1 can be a turn off, and after seeing that crap no one really wants to watch the next 5. For me it will always start with 4, and then you go back to see where it came from. It will make some sense too, as the graphics improve instead of deminish.

You are going to get various answers ranging from there was no money to finish them all to George Lucas says he wanted to wait until special effects improved to the point he wanted to finish. I have read that he originally planned for more movies, which may eventually happen who knows.
What I think is, episodes 4, 5 and 6 became such huge movies that eventually greed crept in and Lucas' wanted to cash in on their popularity. Why else would he ruin the classics by screwing up the story the way he did.
The man finished the story with 4, 5, and 6 and put so many inconsistencies in 1, 2, and 3 that the ending wouldn't match the beginning.
The first three made are the best. The stories are solid and well played. The newer versions weren't up to par for me. They had the effects, but the story wasn't right.
Either way, this is just my opinion.

George Lucas wrote the whole thing (well rough ideas) from beginning to end when he originally thought of it. When he took it to sell to a studio they said well its good but the end bit of the story is loads better and we think it will sell better to todayts audience (in the 70's). So A new Hope was made and released and an agreement made to make the 2 sequels.
I don't think George Lucas was ever gonna go back to the beginning but the obviuos huge success of the originals followed by the improvements in technology meant that he could fulfill his dream and finish the story so the beginning of the story was mnade and released.
When you watch it it is up to youi whether you watch from episode 1 through to 6 or originals to new. I do it in chronologically.
Hope that helped x

Well... it was good. I watched it last night... I remembered all the characters.... Well... We have.... Spock who is half human/half vulcan, he put himself down, He still has some self hating issue.... He should be the Captain of the ship. I think he is still racist toward humans. I wish he love himself more. Dr. McCoy... he made the movie viewers laughed. I was looking for Scotty, then, oh there he is... in the middle of the movie. Uhura, she has that thing on her ear, I was like... wow... 43 years later, we have a cell phone ear piece. Sulu, I remember that character. Pavel Chekov, I remember that character too. Star War was made in 1977... 11 years after Star Trek... So it isn't fair to compare Star War to Star Trek... Gene Roddenberry was a risk taker... putting special effect... Without him, George Lucas wouldn't be famous.... Lucas was adding more better special effect. That is like saying... The Terminator 2 (1991) is better than Terminator (1984). They just put in more money in that movie, and making the movie look much better with amazing special effect. Anyway, I can't wait for the new Terminator this month...

Originally there was only going to be one movie, but with the success of Star Wars(episode 4, "A New Hope" was added on as a subtitle later) they decided to finish the trilogy that George Lucas had in mind. The popularity of the films never died and near its 20th anniversary they began to make episodes 1-3 (the back story that George always had in mind)

becuase it would have tanked in the box office. Nobody even really expected it to do as well as it did. george Lucas didn't even originally plan on making more than one, #4, but it did so well they went on. The books and story were always there, but imagine if they made the first 3 in the early 80's. Nobody ants to see the good guy turn evil and kill everyone. The movie would have flopped, and no one would want to see the ones afterwards.

the reason g. lucus waited to do 1-3 is because the technology he needed to do them the way he wanted was not created yet. the man is a genius, good thing he uses it for good and not evil!
