Is it because it eases blood flow?

it eases the blood flow because it relaxes your muscles in the lower abdomen. the cramps are muscle contractions. i always found that moist heat worked a lot better than dry heat so i relied on a 'moist' heating pad. be sure to buy one specifically designed for use with a dampened insert since it's mixing water and electricity.

a hot water bottle works well also, but it's much more of a headache to use.

also, work with your breathing. it's like childbirth, almost... help your body to relax. sometimes long, slow, deep diaphragmatic breathing is best, sometimes those blasted pants help.

It is for the same reason you need to keep your feet covered when walking on a cold floor, while you are menstruating. You don't want to get the cold air in, and because the cold causes the nerves to hurt. It does effect blood flow. When I had an injury and needed therapy, they put a heat pad on the pain. They said it was good for bringing down swelling and eased the pain. I guess using a heat pad could do the same for cramps.

Heat is just known to ease any pain. Get a heating pad. Also try putting sports cream on your lower stomach, it helps too.
