I have a 29 gallon tank in my office. It is not over populated and regular water changes or done. It has been up and running for a about year with no issues and very little loss of fish. What would cause the water to go from crystal clear to green and clouded over night? There is also a definite odor coming from the tank.

Cloudy water in an established tank is almost always from a bacterial bloom. The smell also indicates this. Did a fish die in the tank? Maybe somewhere behind a rock or underneath something where it cannot be seen easily? This is my first thought. Find the dead fish, get it out, and do a water change. Or did someone overfeed the fish? Are you sure no one, a child, or perhaps a cleaning staff person did not get hold of the food and try to be "helpful" and feed the fish too much? Excess food/decaying livestock could provide nutrients for a algae bloom, too.

Make sure you clean your tank every month. If the cloud is algae, you can always add an algae eater to your collection, they are great at keeping the algae level down...

also, is your tank suddenly getting more sunlight than before? This can cause rapid algae growth too...

You need to clean the tank out completely re wash all stuff & start again a little change of water every so often won`t do the trick.Treat the tank as if it was your partner?

Has the source of your water been changed? Is the tank in sunlight? Are you using a new brand of filter?

You need to clean out your tank about once a month or so........it's getting cloudy b/c of all the fish poop and all the other gunk like moss and stuff is building up.....so just clean it out and see if that helps

it turned green because of the sun (placed in direct sunlight). Just simply go to the pet store and buy algae remover

Is the water itself green cloudy or did everything get covered in algae and its more of a white cloudy?

Either way check this site out, it tells you what causes both and a way to get rid of it. http://www.drhelm.com/aquarium/cloudy%20water.html
