Eset Nod32 and Avast 4 are the 2 anti-virus programs I've seen that use the least memory. Anti-vir was next in line. I didn't like the interface for AVG but it's very good for virus protecion...

Your best option is to have no anti-virus software.
If you avoid downloading software from untrustworthy sources, and you avoid opening e-mail attachments from people you don't know, you're not likely to get a virus.
As a precaution, back up your important documents. If you do get a virus, you can just wipe your computer clean, re-install your software, and restore your documents.
Anti-virus software is overrated. It's expensive, it causes performance problems, and many viruses get through it, anyway. Do you know anyone who has been saved from a virus by their anti-virus software? Me neither.
Another option is to install the anti-virus software, but turn off the real-time protection, and just run a scan every few days. This requires much less resources.

Personally I like the new AOL AntiVirusShield the best. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which in test after test is always at the top or very near it in virus detection rates. Plus it is very lite in resource use, only about 5 MB of RAM. While not having as many features as the $40 Kaspersky program, it is 100% free to anyone, AOL member or not.
