Hey there. I'm dominican and I can tell you that Punta Cana it's much prettier than Puerto Plata, although I think Puerto Plata is cheaper.
Some good hotels in Puerto Plata are Coral Marien by Hilton and Iberostar. Also, you can find some really good hotels in Playa Dorada Complexs. I can't tell you about Punta Cana, sorry. Almost every hotel is all inclusive.

If you are going in vacation you must choose Punta Cana or Bavaro Beach (they are both in the east coast). Also, you can go to La Romana in the south east. In there you can book the Dominicus resorts or the luxurious Casa de Campo.
In the capital city, try the Renaissance Jaragua or the Melia Santo Domingo hotels.
In puerto Plata you must go to Playa Dorada, a complex with 15 hotels working the All Inclusive product.
Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!

Punta Cana is a little more expensive than Puerto Plata but it's worth it. My fiance and I stayed at the Iberostar Dominicana Resort (all inclusive) which is located on Bavaro Beach. If you stay there you also have rights to the sister hotel Iberostar Punta Cana which shares the same grounds. I believe we paid $3,700.00 for everything (hotel & airfare).

We've stayed in Hamaca Coral by Hilton in Santo Domingo (in the south). We went in Feb. and the weather was hot, drinks good and food so-so. It's an all-inclusive, very clean and the maids can't do enough for you. My son stayed in Punta t Cana and said it was way too commercialized. We stayed in Sosua a couple of years ago, a small resort with hotel rooms. They had cold tubs (opp. of hot tubs) overlooking the ocean. I don't remember the name but the entertainment was great and the food was good. That was the least expensive. Don't wander!!

If you can get a good deal...try The Bahia Principe Punta Cana. It has very good reviews and looks like a great resort. I was supposed to go there a couple of weeks ago....but our house and animal sitter moved. Luckily I found out she was moving about 15 minutes before I was going to go to the travel agent and book. Go to "Trip Advisor" and you can see pictures and read reviews of all the resorts in the D.R. Lucky you, have fun on your trip.
