Shops are being warned they must reduce the number of plastic bags given out.

if they don't cut back voluntarily then new laws may be brought in to
make people pay for them.

absolutely. the amount of oil that goes into making all of the plastic is incredible. Oil's obviously running out pretty quickly (and there are a few tiffs going on around the world over it)... think we should try to use something else...like one of those baskets on your bike... ;-)

No matter what, grocery stores do not make much on the dollar. Plastic bags are a priviledge and not required by any place to offer for free(Making A a better solution). Maybe the key to this problem isn't so much reducing the amount of plastic bags, but trying to get people to move to canvas bags and/or boxes. Don't try to defeat a problem by targeting it directly - you need a solution that people would prefer compared to it. The store nor the people should be punished, so a better solution could be making store logo canvas bags. People can buy these bags making the store money, and get a card stamped say like for every $25 they spend filling their canvas bags. After like $100 -$150 give then a 10% off coupon. Enticing people to spend money to save money gets everyone.

yes! I have bought some bags for life from asda. they are only 5p each and when they are ripped they will replace free of charge and recycle the old ones.

or buy cloth bags and reuse. i have a bag that folds up really small. it cost £1 from au naterale and it's the same size as a shopping bag. v useful.

co-ops plastic bags are biodegradable.

For sure. Tesco give points for taking them back & re-using them (Green Clubcard points, to add to your regular Clubcard points). So as well as helping the planet, you're adding to your points total & you can enjoy a bigger saving on your shopping - using the recycled plastic bags, of course!!!

We already do this in South Africa, so what we do is take the old bags folded up back to the shops with us and use theminstead of continually payingfor new bags.

Yes - if I HAD to I would bother taking mine to shops. Laws like this and compulsory recycling should have been around forever.
