When I hit a bump in the road, sometimes my 300E shimmies like the wheel is going to come off, and then quiets down and rides like a dream again. It feels like it is coming from the right front.

The MB mechanic is correct. Most 1992 300e's are at that point where a major suspension overhaul is in order. I own 3 1987 300TD wagons for the family plus my two toys, a 67 200D and a 72 280sl.

All the wagons have over 325000 miles on them but have had the suspensions rebuilt at the dealership at 250000. The cost was about $4500 for each wagon. This was a complete overhaul of all bushings, tie rods, ball joints and sway bars.

I take diligent care of my cars because my family is important to me. The Mercedes Benz automobiles are the safest in the world and the most reliable when cared for correctly.

If your 92 300e is well cared for and runs well then the suspension overhaul becomes an investment not a repair. Kelly Blue Book puts the retail value of your car in excellent condtion at $6850. Trade in value in Good conditon at $3450 This now becomes an emotional and a value call. If you enjoy the car and it is well cared for then the investment is of value. Once repaired it will continue to provide you with safe and reliable transportation as long as it is cared for correctly.

PS the 67 200D has over 800000 miles on it and the suspension has been rebuilt twice once at 325000 and then again at 700000.

Cost each time was just over $3000. More than I paid for the car when new. But it is the most reliable car I have ever owned. And it is still my daily driver.

Get ready for some good 15 year old front suspension rebuilding. Don't just replace a couple of parts on the right side and not do the whole job. The only place is a Mercedes Benz dealer or mechanic who has worked on the car at Mercedes and now is out on there own. There are some things to watch out for 4 subframe mounts should also be replaced along with tie rods ball joints and sway bar parts lots of parts!. And while your at it replace all 4 tires and get a expert 4 wheel alignment. Thousands of dollars ready? It is the dirtiest job the mechanic can do...

sounds to me like upper strut mounts. open your hood and look at the right side closer to the windshield than the grill. they are on both sides but if you think its from the right then look there. they are round black rubber and have one nut in the middle of them. look for any cracks. the dealership is the best place to take it but i understand the money thing. some of these older mercedes need so much work on them. i just did 9000 dollars worth of transmission and ac work on an 87. expect a large list of parts no matter where you go. most of those cars are pretty worn out

Being that the car is a '92, don't put a lot of money in it and ANY front end guy can repair or replace the worn part.
If you redo the front end at a Benz dealer it will cost MUCH more then the value of the car.
