I went to a resturant one evening. I wanted to run a tab and they requested a CC. The total bill was $20 with drinks and tip. I rarely use my CC's.

When I got my CC statement, there were 2 charges on it for the same place - one for $20 and one for $50.

I called the resturant and asked why this happened. The manager asked me the date of the transaction. He explained when you give a CC to the waitstaff for a tab, they typically run it for an amount equal to $25 per person in the party and then back that transaction amount out and put the actual total in. They have be burned by people in the past. Not a problem.

He then told me due to the date of my transaction, it involved two employees who were running a scam - one was my waitress and the other was the bar manager. They would enter both transactions and pocket the cash on the CC check. Nobody caught it as they would always mix the CC slips up so no one saw a pattern or turned in the next day and the bar manager had no one looking at his receipts. They would do this 1 to 10 times a day depending on how busy they were. Then the complaint calls started. They were both fired. Due to the amount of theft - $5700 at the time I reported it and growing, they were prosecuted for Felony theft.

The manager refunded my $20 purchase, the $50 bogus charge, and gave me $100 in gift certificates. There were no interest charges to go after as I paid my balance monthly. But I did have to give them a copy of my CC statement to help with the case. I changed the account numbers immediately.

ALWAYS REVIEW YOUR CC STATEMENTS!

To prevent credit card fraud I have requested my credit card company to reissue me a new card number every 6 months.

This way, places that have my old number in there system won't be able to use it if it is stolen by an employee or criminal.
