I want to get a good gaming videocard that doesn't cost me a bundle. My computer has AGP 8x, so I need the best videocard that can go in that slot. I know AGP is being phased out pretty much by PCI express, but my computer is that old 478 socket, and I'm running a 2.8 GHz processor, which should be sufficient for gaming. I have an ATI Radeon 9550 (256 MB) but when I'm playing some games it just doesn't run smoothly. It gets particularly laggy when there's smoke or shadows turned on within a game. I don't want to lose my wallet unless I have to, and I don't have enough experience with videocards to know which one would be good for me. Let me know what you gamers think.

I'm not sure if maybe I just need to tweak my videocard. I don't want to do that whole overclocking thing unless I'm sure it won't damage the card.

I remember back in the day when Voodoo3 was the only videocard to get... Hah.

The 9800XT is only a slight upgrade over what you currently have. The 7800GS is your best option, it is close to $300 though. Also you need to make sure your power supply can support the new card. If you need further help please feel free to email me.

in case you have, or think of you will get, Vista (and subsequently DirectX 10) then get the 8600GTS. in case you're unlikely to get Vista then the 7800GTX may well be good sufficient for now. nevertheless if, interior the destiny, you want to play DX10 video games, you will want Vista and an 8 sequence (or larger) card. DirectX 10 is barely supported on Vista. which potential DirectX 10 purely video games won't paintings on XP.
