Why do so many people, in America especially, do not like liberals?

I hear so many accounts from America, stating that the republicans, wishing to smear a democrat candidate, call him liberal. It's like ... "He's liberal, oh my gosh, head for the hills!" What's the fuss? In Europe, it would just outline a candidate's policies.

i'll give you several reasons why.

1. they're hypocrites. they claim to be all for freedom of speech and expression. yet say something they don't like and they swear, cuss, and call you names. they also preach tolerance and claim to be "open minded" yet are extremely intolerant and closed minded towards ideals that differ from their's.

2. they're hateful. if you're white, they hate you. if you're christian, they hate you. if you're heterosexual, they hate you. if you own a firearm, they hate you. if you disagree with political correctness, they hate you. if you drive a certain vehicle, they hate you. if you eat meat, they hate you. if you vote republican, they hate you. if you shop at wal mart, they hate you. if you're not self loathing, they hate you. if you don't believe america sucks, they hate you. if you like NASCAR, they hate you. if you question their beliefs, they hate you.

3. they're controlling. they have corrupted the first amendment {freedom of speech} with banning words and ideals they deem offensive with their dictorial speech codes called political correctness. americans are no longer allowed to speak their free mind. they use PC to silence any opposition to their cause.

During the Reagan Revolution in the 1980s, when Liberalism had basically defined American government even during the Eisenhower and Nixon administrations, President Reagan was able to successfully convince people that the cause of all things bad in the world, from gasoline lines to Soviet labor camps, were the result of Liberalism. By redifining the word to become a swear word, President Reagan was able to replace American values and dreams with a partisan slogan. Liberals like me saw this happening and didn't have the stomach to get down into the gutter with him. Now, after repeating the same mantra for 25 years, the slogan has come to take on its own meaning.

You are right, liberal is a smear word.
But, I don't see the problem. Politics has been a name calling fest. since the 70's...
The reality is conservatism wants to promote business which helps job growth. While Liberalism wants to keep human issues in the for front which cost great gobs of money, and that usually means higher taxes....
However, that doesn't show that either of these ideals is wrong ,only opposed. And at this moment in time the conservatives have had the upper hand for a while, that will change at some point ..

So does it really matter????

The term liberal used to describe someone who favored humanitarian progress over big business. Part of the propaganda put forth by the military-industrial complex is to redefine liberalism as something bad. This helps them gain support for the things they do. The civil rights of Americans are quickly becoming a thing of the past, If liberals are considered weak, tree-hugging idiots, fewer people will heed their warnings. Even the American Civil Liberties Union is now looked upon in a bad light.

you also need to understand that too many people do not think for themselves and accept the propagation of lies as truthful journalism. many still believe that the Bush administration has integrity and is hell-bent on the protection of Americans against the evil Muslims. Liberals, as described by the republicans, will be soft on the evil Muslims and allow them to destroy the country.

In order to unite a people as diverse as Americans, it is important to establish a common enemy. In this case, it is Islam and the weak liberals who will not protect against it.

In the US, the word liberal is a bad word, because it has a connotation to people that you are for keeping subsidies and handouts to those who are able to work, just choose not to. Most people in the US are tired of paying to support other people and their children,(and they are usually better off than the person that is working to pay the taxes to make the support possible in the first place.) There are many middle income people in the US that can not afford health insurance because of the high cost, but they are making too much money to be eligible for medicaid(free medical treatments) so they go without medical care at all, and get upset when they see that someone that does not even have a job, or wont try to help themselves, get health care for free. It seems heartless to be upset at helping the less fortunate, but the majority of those receiving help don't really need it, (they need a swift kick in the back side to get their attention and to be told the free ride stops here.)
So the long and short of it is that when you say someone is a liberal - they are for letting the free ride continue on, and prevents those people who are working and trying to better their own lives to gain any ground in their effort.

The most sucessful President in American History was FDR, he was a Liberal, and was elected 4 times. Republicans like to bash Liberals because they have nothing else to offer, look at the Country, a big mess, and we will clean out the Barn in november, and lets not forget, Jesus was the first Liberal, we cannot do much better than that.

It started about 1979 when Ronald Reagan made it a dirty word. That was only the beginning, but there are many of us liberals that still wear that label proudly, what it means here in America is we liberals put people ahead of money or personal gain. If an object is to be lifted it is easier to lift from the bottom, the conservatives believe that to lift from the top is better, yes I am proud to be a liberal.

I disagree such as your first premise. confident, we could continuously attempt to be information of alternative cultures, yet that doesn't inevitably entail tolerance. i do no longer join ethical relativism, so i've got not got faith that in basic terms because of the fact something is the norm in a manner of existence, it rather is for this reason justifiable and could be allowed. i've got not got faith that lady circumcision could be allowed, for example. So, to find at your question, i'd say that it rather is clever for us to attempt to understand racism and intolerance - the place it comes from and why it persists - yet that doesn't recommend we could continuously tolerate it. i'm no longer suggesting throwing human beings in detention center for racist speech or something like that, yet I do think of that we could continuously no longer enable such rhetoric and action to bypass unchallenged. Intolerance is a probability to all freedom because of the fact it ability that there are limits to "specific human beings's" freedoms. properly, all all of us is in possibility of being some team's theory of "specific human beings." We the two all have equivalent freedom or all of us probability dropping it.

It is because the Conservative Talk Radio Host on American Syndicated Radio has turned the word liberal into a derogatory word, and not a position. The Conservatives are even out to do a hatchet job on the moderates. If you are not far right of center then you are somehow less then human.
