The top of the pit has to be suspended over water. Keep the water at a level a little over the middle. I use a plastic container and insert tooth picks on the pit to keep it suspended. Maintain the water about the same level at all times. You have to be patient, sometimes take time until the roots start appearing. I grew many beautiful plants using this method. I am growing two right now. Good luck.

You can also place the pit in a pot with moss, making sure that the head of the pit is exposed and the moss always damp. The advantage of this method as against water suspension is that when the roots start to develop it can easily be transfered to a regular pot without damaging the roots. Avocado is a tropical fruit so it will require sunlight during its developing stage.

I grew once a long time ago. I was in college at the time and threw it away when I left but it did grow. First I put toothpics in the seed and put in a glass of water so about half of the seed was in the water. As soon as it began to "sprout" I transfered to a large pot. (about a 12"-18" in diameter and 12"-18" deep). I just used regular potting soil and nothing else. The plant got to be about two feet tall before I threw it out.

the pointed end is up...if you can tell which is the pointed end...
stick 4 tooth picks in it like a +..."suspend it in a glass of water in a well lit, but not HOT window. it will figure out how to grow. give it plenty of time....also with the seasons changing..."it" will be confused if you try to put it outside too soon. they are raised in warm dry climates.....have fun....even if you don't get it to produce anything...good luck
