I'm Singaporean, so here's my take!

Chewing gum is legal. Selling some kinds of gum isn't.
The British surrendered to the Japanese on 15 February 1942 in Ford Motor Factory, on mainland Singapore. NOT on Sentosa.

It is now a historic site which you can visit. It's along Bukit Timah Road. You can visit Bukit Timah Hill, a nature reserve, while you're in the area. Bring plenty of water.

Visit the Chingay Festival, a street parade, if you're still here in late February.

Visit the traditional ethnic enclaves- Chinatown, Geylang Serai and Little India. They may be a bit touristy though.

Or visit the sprawling Bugis Market for great, cheap shopping with youngsters and young adults. There's even a sex toy shop inside...

Go to Pulau Ubin to see what mainland Singapore was in the 1960-70s- there are villages on the island. Rent a bicycle and explore it. Drink Thai coconut juice there too. You'll have to get there by boat from Changi Jetty.

Shop, shop and shop. Visit the zoo, the bird park and Santosa Island-it's where the British surrendered to the Japanese. Swim with the pink dolphins. Have a smoke at a rubbish bin and have a chat with the really friendly locals. Go to China Town, visit the old Raffles Hotel and check out the old British Colonial heritage. Obey the laws, the fines are severe for even small offences. Don't go near drugs, Singapore imposes the death penalty. Singapore is very, very nice, excellant public transport and populated by people who will help a stranger.

A safe bet - hop on one of the city tours (can be arranged in most hotels), they cover most of the major tourist attractions in the shortest time possible. The Zoo (open concept, most animals are NOT behind cages) and the adjoining Night Safari are worth a visit. Visit Little India & Chinatown for a contrast of cultures. Shopping at Orchard Road, Marina Mall. Eat seafood at the East Coast Seafood Center and try out the food courts in most major shopping centers - great section of food representing the various nationalities we have in Singapore. Entertainment - do not miss out Boat Quay & Clarke Quay, with many restaurants/pubs to select. For something sleazy (music/entertainment/ladies), Orchard Towers is where you have them all. Have fun ... be good :-)

Go to Bugis, Orchard, Somerset, Dhoby Ghaut, City Hall, VivoCity at HabourFront(largest Shopping Ctr in Singapore) for shopping!!

Go to Arab Street, Lau Pa Sat, Newton Food centre for great food!!

Go to Kampong Glam to know more abt Malay culture, go to Little India for Indian culture and Chinatown for Chinese culture.
(Chinatown and Little India are rather full of unfriendly people who will push people around. And I strongly recommend Malay Heritage Centre at Kampong Glam/Arab Street where you will know more abt the culture. There is a small palace and a museum. Nice Southeast asian food and arab food.)

For your info, Singapore has74% Chinese population and Singapore is not a Chinese country. Singapore is a MALAY COUNTRY. Malays found this island and Malay language is the National Language of Singapore. English is the first language.

Go to Singapore Discovery Centre, Singapore Science Ctr, Singapore Zoo(one of the world's best), Jurong Bird Park(most species of birds) or go around city area for the museums.

Go to HDB or blocks of flats.. There is where most Singaporeans live. See the facilities, see the shops, the lifts, see the people...

If you like eletronics, Funan The IT Mall and SimLim Square.. It will be heaven! Lots of latest stuff.

I used to mop my brow and say 'damn this heat' then go to Raffles for a gin&tonic when it rained in the afternoon. It was a happy time.
