Its advisable to make a reservation with the hotel either through your travel agent, online or by calling them to ensure that they have available room and reserve it for you on the date you will be arriving. Front or Reception desk personnel will be the people to help you in checking in...have papers sign, give you the key of your room and have the bell boys assist you with your luggage.

If you can, you should make your reservation first before actually checking in. You can do this by either calling up the reservation number of the hotel of your choice and book a room, or by booking online. Be sure to know what kind of room you want, what size of bed you wish to have, whether it is a smoking or non-smoking room that you wish to stay in, and other such details. Doing your homework on hotels in advance actually helps before you make your booking. Also, booking ensures that there will be an available room for you when you get to the hotel.
However, if it is impossible for you to book a room in advance, just go to the hotel of your choice and approach the front desk. Just say you want a room for the number of days you will be there. Be prepared, however, when the front desk personnel tells you that they don't have any available rooms, because that is a huge possibility when you have not made a reservation in advance.

There are really no special protocols followed to check into a 5-star hotel as compared to checking in at any other hotel. You just walk up to the front desk to check-in. Just remember, courteous behavior is expected of you as a guest--do not cut-in line and make crude and loud comments. Also make sure you show up not half-naked and belligerent; and by all means have the funds (cash/credit card) ready to pay the staff for your stay when needed.

Call to make a reservation, in case you havent yet
Check-in @ check-in time most hotels is at 2 or 3 pm, but most 5 stars accomodate early chek-in ( but dont push it)
At the front desk , make sure you have your passport or picture ID, a credit card if you're going to pay by credit card, if you're going to pay cash you need to pay the entire stay plus additional night for deposit (if deposit is not consumed, it will be refunded upon check-out), sign the registration card.
Plus make sure you know that most rates are quoted in $ but since you credit card will be charged in pesos, the room rate will be converted to pesos (dont fret, coversion rate is really higher than the actual exchange rate)
Dont forget to tip the concierge/bellboy/Housekeeping

You walk up to the desk and check in. You don't need to have anyone carry your bags for you, do it yourself.
Enjoy!
