From my lessons in German language and culture, I've learned that "friend" (Freund) is a term much more carefully applied. What passes for "friend" in American culture is actually "acquaintance" (ein Bekanter).
A German will maybe have one or a few Freunde (friends) in his life, but can have many Bekanten (acquaintances). I read that some have NO best friend, and are okay with that. You just don't trust anybody as friend, that is a very special relationship.

Not only man, all animals need friends not only to over come their lonliness and sharing ideas, but even for the feeling of comfort and security.
In humans the desire is more as there is communication and lot more exchange of support and ideas. Go ahead hav friends- more so hav good ones.

Yes,everyone needs a best friend. Someone that you can talk to about things and know that they will give you the best advice possible on anything.It is good to have a best friend.

You probably don't need a best friend but life is much more enjoyable with one or a large group of friends. I wouldn't be without my best friend - I've known her 24 years and we're like sisters - she's brilliant!

i think everybody needs someone like them that they can trust more than anyone else, share things in common, laugh and tell your deepest secrets to, someone who makes you feel good to be around, someone who is caring, trustworthy, doesn't mind standing up for you

of coarse everyone should or deserve to have a best friend....my bestest mate has always been there and his friendship has and always will be an unquestionable one,never have i queried anything about or friendship or him,he's just the best mate and his wife is one of the most genuine friendly and caring person and if i had a g/f or wive i hope she is as nice a person as my mates wife because then i will be truelly happy...

Life is much more pleasant if you have a best friend. But if you don't have one...it's better to wait for the right friend than to insert anyone just anyone to that special place in your life.

I don't know if everyone "needs" a best friend. I do. I think most people do. But it wouldn't surprise me if some felt perfectly comfortable without one.
