After listening to a lot of teenagers on their mobile phones, it seems they skip the hello and just ask 'WHERE ARE YOU?' followed by 'NO, WHERE ARE YOU?'.
With 2 teenagers in my house I'm learning a whole new language, which seems to change on a weekly basis.

Just start talking to them. Ask them how their day is going if you think the person will be receptive and talk to you back.

saying "whats up how are you" might look wierd in case you dont understand them. for starters, attempt fabulous a verbal substitute approximately gymnastics. compliment them whilst they do a pass which you like. ask them how they do it, how they discovered to do it so properly, and so on. oftentimes conversations are all started like this. wish i helped =]
