Sounds to me like you should see a doctor. If you don't and you have torn some ligaments, or something, you could damage your knees to the point where you never walk without a crutch. How's that for some eye opening information? Don't chance it, please, it's worth the doctor visit. In the meantime, until you have made your appointment, try applications of aloe vera, preferably from the plant itself, you take some of its leaves, crush them up and put them in the microwave for a few seconds, then plaster the stuff over your knees, this promotes natural healing.....or for the pain, some ice in a cloth laid over the knees. This is no substitue for a doctor taking a look though. Think hard on this one, sounds like you are an active person, I would hate to see that end due to procastination....okay?

Yes. See a doctor. It could be a question of stretching. You placed a lot of strain on your leg muscles without, perhaps, proper warm ups. Little and often may be better than these big hikes. It may be that your muscles bunched up without giving your tendons a chance to stretch, putting pressure on the knee cap. Go see the GP. They may refer you for physio, or you might have actually done some damage to the cartlidge.
Go see your GP.

I've been a letter carrier with the Postal Service for the past 18 years, my duties have been carrying a 35 lb. bag of mail for 15 miles a day, up 230 flights of stairs and 19 hills of significant incline in 100+ degree heat and snow up to my knees. After 18 years of doing this, I have developed severe arthritis in my knees, ankles and feet. Bone spurs on my feet and the cartladge in my knees is gone (bone on bone). But it DID take 18 years to cause so much damage...I have applied for disability retirement.

Get it checked by a doctor and go easy on the hiking in future. Build up to a hike of that magnitude, its asking for trouble to just do that sort of hike if you are basically not up to it.

I agree with the other messages. You need to see a doctor. You may not have warmed up or stretched enough, causing your joints and muscles excessive fatigue.
Good Luck!!
