Actually, the word "professor" meant someone quite different, back in the 17th century, who "professed" a religion or faith. George Fox, the man who is recognized for having begun the Quaker Christian religion, wrote about confronting various "professors" (evangelists or preachers) about inconsistencies and hypocrisies in their teachings and lives.

Today, a professor is one who declares her or his teachings in a lecture. Teaching is a process expressed in a word, usually applied to the levels from kindergarten through the twelfth grade (form).
