No, in the UK thats illegal and any company who did so would be facing an employment tribunal hearing.
You CANNOT penalise an employee in any way whatsoever - sacking, demotion etc for any pregnancy related complication or illness. That even applies to morning sickness. A woman who has to have a lot of time off sick from work because of morning sickness cannot be disciplined or sacked because of her attendance and the employer cannot take the pregnancy related absences into account when working out how much "sick leave" she's had in order to sack or demote her.
So any company who tried this would be getting themselves into very hot water and looking at being liable to pay damages to the woman in question.

No - It is covered under the equal opportunities section of the Unfair Dismissal legislation. Normally, when sacked, we can claim compensation from the company, if found to be unfair. Usually these figures are capped. There is NO upper limit to equality related payouts.
If you are being treated unfairly or you are being bullied out of your job - keep a diary. Lawyers love that sort of thing.

This is not the best place to get an answer and a lot of people may be giving you wrong info because you havn't given all the facts.
You're in th uk right?
If so, go to Citizens Advice. There should be one in the local phone book. They are a completely free service who wil tell you exactly what your rights are so you no exactly where you stand. Best of all they will not pass judgement. They will simply tell you your rights and what to do with the situation you are in.

Well 1. It depends on the country you are living in and their laws (why does everyone assume we are all American)
2. It depends if she has gone through disciplinaries and training to achieve targets she wasnt previously hitting
3. It depends on the nature of the illness
It depends on a lot of factors.

If you off on the sick than you should not be saked, however if you are at work and claiming full pay, I do not think it is unreasonable for the employer to expect that you provide an acceptable performance (with a certain amount of symapthy)
