For Servers - Linux by a mile
For the everyday user that does not want to learn more about computers - Windows. Windows has more common programs, it gets more use, it's easier to install new hardware and software, and more people are already using it.
For computer geeks, Linux by 10 miles
For computer repair shops - Windows, there is always a broken Window to fix.

Both Windows and Linux come in many flavors. All the flavors of Windows come from Microsoft, the various distributions of Linux come from different companies (i.e. Linspire, Red Hat, SuSE, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Knoppix, Slackware, Lycoris). Windows has two main lines: "Win9x", which consists of Windows 95, 98, 98SE and Me, and "NT class" which consists of Windows NT, 2000 and XP. Windows actually started, in the old days, with version 3.x which pre-dated Windows 95 by a few years.
The flavors of Linux are referred to as distributions (often shortened to "distros"). All the Linux distributions released around the same time frame will use the same kernel (the guts of the Operating System). They differ in the add-on software provided, GUI, install process, price, documentation and technical support. Both Linux and Windows come in desktop and server editions.
There may be too many distributions of Linux, it's possible that this is hurting Linux in the marketplace. It could be that the lack of a Linux distro from a major computer company is also hurting it in the marketplace. Perhaps this will change with Novell's purchase of SuSE. IBM is a big Linux backer but does not have their own branded distribution.
Linux is customizable in a way that Windows is not. There are many special purpose versions of Linux above and beyond the full blown distributions described above. For example, NASLite is a version of Linux that runs off a single floppy disk and converts an old computer into a file server. This ultra small edition of Linux is capable of networking, file sharing and being a web server.

From my point of view Linux is better because of its security and rich set of commands. Linux is a open source. Today almost all the servers are linux servers. But the only thing it is not user friendly. But windows is more user friendly.

in some case linux...in some windows...
Linux i extremly secure, vitually no virus/spyware exits for Linux plateform, new versions are getting more n more user freindly...But there are limitation of application or games...only handfull of game companies offer new games for linux too, forget about the old games.
Windows is extremly user freindly, colorfull, support almost every kind of softwares, drivers and games but have many security loop holes.u have to keep ur windows OS up to date in order to ensure high security.
I would suggest for running both OS at a same time...u can google a tuturial for installing Linux and windows on same machine.

Depends on your necessities...
windows is user friendly, does everything for you...
Linux is developer friendly, you can design a driver for your hard ware yourself...
you get free code for linux which is a open source...

Depends on what you are using the system for, and how much you know about computers, but generally almost anything is better than Windows.
