Why do most automated phone systems have a female voice? What are the benefits of, say, having a female narrator doing voice-overs, as opposed to a male?

Well, the first voice that any human being 'connects' with is the mother's voice.

Females by nature also use more intonation in their voices (the "musical" quality people are speaking about), whereas men naturally use a flatter intonation. Because of this quality, the female voice tends to be more engaging and establishes more connection with the listener.

The intonation aspect as well as the "softer" nature of the female voice also is less intimidating and less prone to lead to conflict; it's simply less threatening at some level than the male voice, which because it is lower and also doesn't offer many emotional cues can seem more confrontational and hard to read.

The nurturing aspect of women is also linked to hearing a female voice, and since most of these are customer service calls (where the person might be upset or just want to feel like they're going to be heard), the female voice seems more appropriate for that.

Our pharmacy recently changed their automated phone system from a female to a male voice, and boy do I really hate it. It's just not the same. (While this probably doesn't make sense, it just feels colder and more impersonal.)

Any automated voice messages irritate the hell out of me male or female. I keep punching numbers on the phone until their system connects me to a "real" person.

More musical to ears ! Certain round edge compared to others that makes it more acceptable, lesser rejection ...
Males can consciously acquire this acceptable round edged voice, to even out beat the feminine voice... just take a keen look at the successful films about great beings(any spiritual master, Godly character etc...), the voice given to such character (dubbed if needed) matches these qualities.

the reason the female recordings cost more and are held in higher regaurd to the male ones is that the higher the pitch, the less of demanding of your attention-since youre listening anyways- its more soothing this way (this is also the reason some males find it very hard to pay attention to children and women-im not joking)
