A solid music knowledge -understanding music not only in the genre he/she plays but outside of that too.

A good musical ear and a good sense of timing - understanding key changes, song structure, beat structure, tempo. There's nothing worse than hearing a DJ mixing two records together that are in different keys and that's at a different speed to the outgoing record.

Complete knowledge of the records he has -know your records, the key of the song, the song structure itself, genre, speed

An obsessive music collector - don't play what everyone else is playing. And that may mean record shopping where everyone is NOT. Many times having the most unique records involves having to go to the strangest basements to find that mint, rare copy of a limited edition, hard to find print track.

A good balance of new music, older stuff and hard to find records that no-one else has -mix it up and play outside of your chosen genre sometimes.

The ability to read and relate to the crowd - it's important to read the crowd to see where you'll be able to take them next. This ties in with knowing your music inside out.

Technical ability - You may have the best records but if you can't beat match, or scratch, or work the fader it will sound terrible. Know you equipment as well.

Confidence - in yourself, your ability and your music.

Most of all remember it's about the music not you - be humble.

Tunes, technical ability (where necessary), tunes, reading the crowd, tunes, and er... tunes.

A good DJ will know what he wants to do with his set, it might sound wånky, but I try and work out a "musical journey", starting in one place, say with some deeper house, before moving onto funkier vocal stuff, bringing in some bass-heavy floorshakers with the occasional old-school classic thrown in, before slowing things down, all the while being able to modify the set as you go along. And you can't go wrong with too much practice; sometimes your set'll go down like a lead balloon (believe me, I've been there), but sometimes you'll get it just right.

being able to guess what the crowd want at the right time and the ability to mix well.........also helps if they are friendly too upon a request of a song as i have met soem rather rude ones in the past. A bit of personality and banter always goes a long way!
