My van is only 4 years old but when the roads are very wet it literally conks out! Smoke billows from exhaust and no power in 1st or 2nd gear. If i manage to coax into higher gear it can ramble (literally) along until i get home but will only move intermittently in 1st or 2nd. it's a diesel and is not going anywhere right now.

to me it sounds like water getting in the turbo unit.

I suspect water is somehow getting into the air induction system - which is particularly disastrous for diesel engines.

Follow the air flow pipes from the air-filter box (both towards the engine and towards the intake "snorkle") to see if you can find where the water could be getting in. Its probably a loose or damaged hose, or a blocked drain in the air-filter housing.

Ignore references to a turbo from other answerers, the C15 has never been factory-fitted with a turbo.
