There is no god. Grow up.

I'd say Science is the only true faith, but there is no faith required, unlike any thoughts of your magical whatever.

What makes you think that god is the one almighty, The concept of god was brought about to give mankind a social order, it worked for a while but we interpreted in different ways, thus creating different religions. Before god there was the Sun, the sun is actually a creator of life so why can't that be the "god almighty" Life's basic instinct is survival, so mankinds greatest fear is death, Hence the creation of "God"

Monotheism (the notion that there is only one god) is a minority belief held by about 1 in 3 of the world's population.
It originates in a tiny region of the planet with little reference to anything away from that region.
As it does not coincide with the origin point of humanity there is no possibility that the idea could be universal.
Judaism is introverted without the need to inflict their beliefs on others.
Christianity and Islam are too involved fighting among themselves.
As the arguments demonstrate, if there was a single deity it made an utter hash of attempting to communicate.
Monotheism is so confused as to be useless to the point whee it would probably be best to to remove the lot and start from scratch.

Since you are asking this in Science, lets point out first of all that there is no god!

So, if god doesn't actually exist, why are there so many religions?

Simple, power and money.

Religion is enormously powerful; it has a huge affect on political decisions. If you don't agree with the political view point of your own religion, no problem, just start a new religion!

Religion also makes obscene amounts of money - tax free!!! You want some of that money for yourself? Easy, just start a new religion and tell your gullible congregation that god needs them to give you lots of money! Don't think it's that simple? Just look at the tele-evangelists on US TV!

I just wish the government would tax religious donations. Then they could use the vast sums raised to lower my taxes! :)

Since you asked this in the Geology section, I will give you my geological answer.

Plate tectonics.

Just as plate tectonics have been responsible for driving evolution, I suggest that plate tectonics has led to the isolation and separation that initially allowed many religions to develop independently. Not all religions are monotheist by the way. Had plate tectonics not created the Himalayas, major religions such as the Hindu and Buddhist religions would not have been prevented from spreading into the Middle Eastern region before the conception of Judaism, Christianity, and the Muslim religion. Taoism likewise was confined by geographic boundaries created by plate tectonics. Theist concepts such as Paganism and Wicken developed very different beliefs based on regional geography, again created by plate tectonics.

So there you have it, one geologist’s big-picture and deep-time view of the world.

Because different people have different ways to worship him.

In reply to the above answer. Buddhist don't think of Buddha as the one almighty and they do not worship him. They simply follow his teachings.Buddhism is not a religion, it is a way of life.

We don't need any , we would be better off without any, most of the worlds troubles ( i.e. conflicts) can be traced back to religion. Be it the Crusades, the Jihads or even the troubles in Northern Ireland. These religious funadmentalists in the middle east and those barm pot evangelicals in the USA will cause the next blow up, you will see.

very good question, i asked that myself when i was writing my book, in which up to now i am still writing it, one of the topic is about religion, and the best conclusion and understandable explenation of understanding in which that in itself is also an answer, well religion serves a purpose, for no matter what religion one may belong to, they all served towards the same aiming goal, since the world religion has come to terms that there is only but one god how ever many names it goes by.he is one and the same, there for religion is according to peoples taste and needs, many according to their up bringing with it, other well just like you go to a candy store and even though they are all sweets at the end of the day, still so many to choose from, we all need religion it served its purpose in some way or another, for if it can help people in staying in the right path, then so be it, religion is serving it's purpose and all according to peoples taste in which they feel more comfortable with, and in understanding themselves and god where their needs and wants is of concern

Probably because people from different cultures adapted their religion as it made the most sense to them. Hence the different religions. Just a thought though.

According to Hindus, there are many gods. Anyone who just has one god could be considered to operate @ a god deficit!

Seriously, religion has little to do with gods & alot to do with culture.
Just like there are cultures for each group of people, each with a history & language, so too religion.

;-)
