I tend to agree with "France travel", I'd say Paris and Bordeaux.
You can also make an attempt in Toulouse named the "ville rose" for its typical buildings and houses made in pink stone (it's the city I live in) !!
But Bordeaux is a realllllly beautiful city, above all since they have a tram which makes the visit downtown easier than before (and the level of pollution lower - which is nicer for the beige stones of the old buildings and houses) !

I am confused as to what exactly your interests are, but Marsaille is such a great place. I spend a lot of time in France, and I only recently made it there. I was completely blown away. It is beautiful and has great history. Their cathedal still has bullet holes from WW2. Most of the cities have catacombs you can visit, which is really interesting. I prefer the south for the people and climate, but of course Paris is everything anyone ever told you and then some. You could spend years there and never learn/see everything.

I can't compare French cities, cuz I've only been to Paris.
I CAN however say you won't be disappointed at it's architecture, nor it's history.... Paris is WELL worth a visit!!!
