I've noticed some people watch TV or use their computers with their lights off . I've never thought about it -- I just naturally have the lights on . Didn't Thomas Edison invent the light bulb so we didn't have to sit in the dark ? Isn't it easier to see the keyboard with the lights on ? What if you want to write a letter while you're watching TV ? Isn't watching TV or playing with your computer with the lights off basically pointless .?

It's not pointless. Often it will give dramatic effect to a movie. It also makes it easier to concentrate when everything else BUT the tv is drowned out in darkness, which makes that movie a focal point. Also, glare on the screen is another reason why people will close the curtains and turn the light off. My tv and computer screens are hell like that. With less light, you don't strain your eyes as much.

But once you get used to the feel of a keyboard, typing becomes instinctive and you don't need to see what you are pressing. If the game requires complex keystrokes though, people will be more likely to use more light.

Well, I usually watch TV or use the computer in the dark because I want to intensify the effect of the game I'm playing or the movie I'm watching. I never really thought about watching TV with the lights on. I guess for most people who do it, it's a habit. Yes. it's easier to see the keys with the lights on, but if you're playing a game, you begin to memorize the necessary keys so you don't really need to see them.
And if for some reason you want to write a letter while watching TV, I guess you leave on the lights. Yes, it's pointless to play or watch in the dark, but maybe some of us fool ourselves into believing that we're saving on electricity. :)

What is the big deal?

I almost always have the lights off. But somebody could make a lot of money by putting some sort of illumination UNDER THE KEYS on the keyboard. Like on a cell phone.

You look down at the keyboard and the way it pulls out of the desk it is usually 'shaded' from the light of the screen. I even bought one of those press - to - turn - on cheap lights, put it under the desk top - above the keyboard, and it just fell down on the keyboard!

Well you are looking at a screen which provides adequate illumination. Watching TV doesn't really require alot of lighting, its almost like going to a mini movie theater. Computers are the same way, but it may seem crisper and brighter since the lights are off.

no cause it is easier on the eyes for some if the light are off and less distractions for one to see if they want to concentrate on wut they are seeing of doing. U go to a movie and they dim the lights so you are not watchin the guy make out somewhere to your left or right same thing at home with the computer or tv only less chance of distractions like that

Some feel that external light sources makes the screen harder to see. Wirth only the light from the monitor, the screen appears brighter

I think there's probably a voyeuristic aspect to them doing that. I can't stand it, feels like you're driving through an endless tunnel.
