I love McCartney but have to admit that some of the contributors have got a point when they say Lennon. He was probably better in his younger years... and never produce much in his latter years that could be described as a classic [except Imagine]. I wonder how many of his last hits would have been successful had he not been shot!
The likes of In My Life, Strawberry Fields, I am the Walrus and I'm Only Sleeping are excellent examples of his ability whilst with The Beatles... However at the end of his tragically short life he started to produce the sort of song that he once criticized Pual for - love songs...
Pauls music has definitely stood the test of time... he has written some absolutel classics... Yesterday, Let It Be, Hey Jude, Band On The Run, Live and Let Die, Maybe I'm Amazed etc. etc. {I think we can excuse the Frog Chorus}
On the whole I think I give my vote to Paul... {although I really loved all of Georges' music too]

I agree with McCartney. In the Beatles they collaborated on almost everything so they were like equals, kind of. After The Beatles, McCartney had all the memorable hits with Wings and under his own name. Lennon only had a few memorable hits and they weren't as good as Pauls. Imagine is his only standout.

Lennon was better than McCartney. There are so many great songwriters out there, but my favourite personally is Billy Joel. He is a great singer and his songs are fantastic, especially Piano Man. Hope you find your answer!

They both wrote some terrible stuff when they went solo. I think Lennon just shades it in my opinion.
Compare the haunting lyrical quality of Lennon's work in 'A Day in the Life' with McCartneys' contribution ("Woke up, got out of bed...")

Personally I think Lennon. The fact that McCartney has had longer to produce can cloud some judgements. If Lennon had still been alive he'd still be producing wonderfll meaningful pieces

Although he is no longer with us, I think McCartneys track record since answers the Question.
And despite recent legal disputes, it was not worded Lennon & McCartney for no reason.

Of the two, Lennon was undoubtedly the best. Listen to Working Class Hero.
But the best songwriter of that era was Bob Dylan, by a mile. Couldn't sing worth a damn but he could write.

i find that the songs that i like the best tend to have been mccartney compositions as far as i can tell - penny lane, ticket to ride, blackbird, norwegian wood, long and winding road. i know mccartney listed who did what recently i never checked to see if any surprised me. typical lennon compositions like come together, revolution leave me cold. i guess some were true joint compositions and probably also amongst their very best. i'm thinking don't let me down, help etc.

I always thought that Lennon wrote most of the songs. Then I hear that McCartney says he let Lennon take all the credit but now he wants the recognition for himself....All very suspicious if you ask me.
