Hi all - I have just done a search on Melatonin as I'm wondering if there are any side effects after taking it for approx. 5 years. Nothing much came up and "FDA" was mentioned because they have done a new study on it (couldnt find it). I also take other herbs and just have the feeling that one of these need to be examined for side effects (just intuition as I have no symptoms). I also take St Johns Wort (6 years, 1,400mcg/day), Remifemin, High Vit B+other vits/minerals and Progesterone cream-post menopausal, (not Progestin/synthetic). Any answers on these also?? Thanks.

I asked my doctor what the long term effects of melatonin are. He said there haven't been any studies on it. I take it all the time, and I've never had any problems. My doctor seemed to think it was safe.

Valerian smells awful! Melatonin isn't for serious insomnia. Unisom. It's OTC and can be bought at your grocery store. Take 30 minutes before bedtime. Turn off tv and other noises. Snuggle up with a bad book, lights low and you'll doze righ toff!

I know you are not supposed to take Melatonin on a regular basis as it can casue rebound insomnia. Also, it is a hormone - and adding hormones to your body on a regular basis that were not prescribed/or being monitored by a doctor is not the best idea in general.
