If he wasn't concerned then it is probably just a localised reaction to a simple viral infection. More serious viral infections include Cytomegalovirus (CMV) or Infectios Mononucleosis (also known as IM or glandular fever) caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). A blood test should sort out these two, as there are specific tests for them. It could also be mumps, although this is unlikely to be missed bt your doctor as the swelling is large und distinctive.

Hope this helps.

You have an inflamation that is causing your gland to swell. It is not the flu or your doctor would have given you a shot. It is possibly an infection but the doctor should have given you an antibiotic of some sort for that. Then again it could just be a cold. Gargle with warm water and aspirin in case it is your wisdom teeth. And stay out of drafts in case it is a cold or soar throat.

Sometimes I get that when the weather is changing. It can be allergies or the start of a cold or virus.
