Well.................................... this is funny.
Have you tried typing their name into a search engine (like Yahoo)?
A lady used to work in our office, she was in charge of petty cash and other administrative duties. Well she always had some poor guy on the go, every week she had a new boyfriend. She was always dressed perfect, with perfect nails and hair, really took great care of herself, despite being very overweight.
Anyway, one of the men she was dating was married. His son found out and looked up this woman's name on the Internet and showed his dad the findings. His dad came to our office looking for her, but she had quit to work elsewhere. He told us that she had been convicted and imprisoned a few years back for embezzlement. He had given her a big wad of dosh on the premise that she would pay him back. She never paid him back.
My colleagues and I were completely gobsmacked. She had been in charge of the cash at our office for one thing. But she just did not strike us as the type of person to be a criminal let alone an ex-con!
We secretly have our eye on another of our colleagues as being some sort of convict - but we're not sure yet.

Not in UK you can't. There's a thing called the Data Protection Act.
If it's to do with a job application offenders have to declare certain convictions but as time goes by these can be 'forgotten'.
It's obviously there to protect people with convictions from prejudice or vigilante action.
Or more importantly perfectly innocent people if a mistken identity is made.
There have been some glaring examples of this in UK lately.

Some counties have web pages where you can find jail and offense information. However, the only thing I know about is the Megan's Law information. Sex Offenders have to register and that information is online.
