We will assume that the second side has lenght = x yards
so, length of the first side(5 yards less than the 2nd) = x-5
length of the third side (2yards less than 1st) = (x-5)-2 = x-7
the perimeter(sum of all sides is given to be 42 yards
so,
x+x-5+x-7 = 42
3x-12 = 42
3x = 42 +12
3x = 54
so,
x=54/3 = 18 yards
First side = 18 yards
Second side = 18-5 = 13 yards
Third side = 18-7 = 11 yards
PLEASE NOTE : you've typed that "3rd side is 2 yards than the first"
i've assumed it to be "...2yards less than the first.."
if it is " 2 yards greater", then the length of 3rd side will be x-3..u can continue from there in the same method

Perimeter (P) = 42
Side 1 (A) = Second side (B) -5
Side 3 (C) = A+ 2
Perimeter = A + B + C
42 = (B-5) + B + (A+2)
2B -5 + A + 2
2B+A-3
add 3 to both sides
45 = 2B + A
substitute for A (B-5)
45 = 2B + B-5
50 =3B, B= 50/3
A= 50/3 -5 = 50/3-15/3 = 35/3
C= A+2, C= [50/3 -5] +2 = 50/3-3 = 50/3 -9/3
41/3
check
P = 35/3 + 50/3 + 41/3 = 126/3 = 42

Let the sides be: x, x+5, x-2 yds.
x +( x+5) +( x-2) = 42 yds= perimeter
3x +3 = 42
3x =42 -3 =39
x =39/3 =13; x+5=18; x-2 =11

Hi,
Its just addition of algebric terms.
Let the length of side1 be x
Then the length of side2 is x+5
And the length of side3 is x-2
Given the perimeter of the triangle is 42 yards.
=> x + x + 5 + x - 2 = 42
=> 3x + 3 = 42
=> 3x = 39
=> x = 13
Length of side1 is x = 13
Length of side2 is x + 5 = 13 + 5 = 18
Length of side3 is x - 2 = 13 - 2 = 11
Their sum ie., 13 + 18 + 11 = 42
Peace out.

18 13 11
To solve it you take 2 from 42 and then take (5 +2) from the 40. This is 33. Divide by 3 and add 2 to one and 7 to the other.

x + x + 5 + x + 2 = 42
3x = 35
x = 11 2/3
x + 5 = 16 2/3
x + 2 = 13 2/3
or
x+x+5+x-2=42
3x = 39
x = 13
x + 5 = 18
x - 2 = 11

x + y + z = 42 .........(1)
y - x = 5 or y = x + 5
x - z = 2 or z = x -2
replace the values of y and z in (1)
Thus, x + x+5 + x-2 + 42
x=13
thus,
y=18 and z = 11

you have x-5+x+x-5-2=42
This is because the first side will represent x(the second side) and -5 because it is 5 less than the side equaling x. x-5-2 represents side 3 who's length is 2 less than x-5.
Now we solve:
x-5+x+x-5-2=42
lets combine like terms:
3x-12=42
then add 12 to each side:
3x=30
then divide each side by 3:
x=10
Your answer is x=10 hope this helped!
