Just to make absolutely sure no more juice can be got out of the battery, a bit more push will force it through.... and if that fails give the remote a shake too and then press harder.

Because if you do not push harder on the buttons then the channel won't charge or the set will not go on or off!
When you have a good battery life you don't need to push so hard as it responds after one push!
So simple really!

the buttons wear and gather grime through time. to clean them, take the remote apart and clean with acetone. half of the time the batteries ain't flat. if you knew the batteries are flat, then you wouldn't press as hard, you'd replace them.
i do see where your coming from though. nice question.

Maybe we think that pressing harder will make it work or maybe we are too sluggish to change the batteries.

Frustration. It's like when something like an appliance doesn't work, what do you do? Bang on it. I think people think that the harder they push the button, they van squeeze just a little more life out of it.

For the same reason we drive faster when we are running out of petrol. And we knit quicker to get to the end of the row when the yarn is running out.
We are funny buggers!

'Cus we're too lazy to get off our behinds to change the batteries. I remember the days when you had to get up off a seat, walk over to the tv to manually change channel. Quaint tradition. ;>)
