I've always wanted a Wallaby! I saw a woman with a baby harness around her neck and tucked inside all warm and napping and adorable with it's big'ol roo legs sticking out was a baby wallaby. I've been smitten ever since.
I doubt that they would make a great family pet, however a pet nontheless. I do not know what their tolerance is for children, however wherever you buy a baby wallaby, the seller should be able to inform you of the pro's and con's. I would at least have an acre of property for the wallaby to act like a roo if it so desired, however I see no problem with letting it live in the house. From what I understand they can be house trained.
They are not as aggressive as their cousin the Kanga, however I'm sure they can be little spit fires if provoked.
I'm sure if you're in the U.S. you will have to research licensing laws, if any. You may only need an agriculture zoning for your home, like what is needed for horses and cattle.
Good luck if you do get a wallaby. I hope that one day I'll have a little wallaby running around my yard with my mini-horse. What a pair. *laughs*

Wallaby are an Australian native marsupial; as such they are wild and free. You would not be able to make a pet out of a kangaroo, and a wallaby belongs to that family. If the Australian Govt agreed (which the won't) you would have to have a permit to have a native animal.
