I think its awful, and I'd be traumatized too! I was a swimming coach for many years, and have never heard of this approach. Children need to feel secure to learn, and dropping them into the water just won't work. Here's a great article on kids and swimming - a lesson plan really. Good luck!

I am a swim instructor and I have never heard of ever teaching little kids like that before. I not saying that that person didn't do it I just haven't heard of any one doing it is all.

What I would do is first teach him out side of the water like how to move you arm's in the front stroke position. Then gradually have him go into the swimming pool even if it is one of those little kiddy pools you by from Wal-Mart

He should be arrested.
I would like to know were he receive his certification to teach.

I am an American Red Cross (ARC) Swim Instructor and I am outraged.

Wow, I truly am sorry that this happened. The best thing that needs to be done is not to force anyone into the water. Newborns are fearless of the water, but at about your brothers age, we start to become more fearful and to be dropped into the water is crazy.

My best advice is to check the certifications of the next "instructor" and if he/she is certified (YMCA or ARC) inform them of your brothers past experiences.

If this "instructor" that dropped your brother into the water is certified... he needs to be reported to the organization the certified him.

Hope this helps.

YOU - take him - first to wadding pools then floats always support or be close enough to save..Use the float to hold up his torso and his legs dangle and keep them straight and let him kick his feet, toes pointed and practice this kick; He can also hold the edge of the pool. Then move the float(Styrofoam 2' by 1' board) down to his waist for paddle practice with his arms. Wait till hes at least six before anyone should help but you. Put a life vest on him and make sure a certified life guard is around only for emergency!

i think that's really mean! when i started swimming my coach didnt force me in the pool at instant. he just allowed me to take my time until i was able to come near the water. and then she'd hold me on the wate and told me to kick my legs and stuffs until i was able to gain self confidence!
my coach didnt have a hard time w/ me though since i really love the water. lol.
now that's what i do everytime i teach my little cousins to swim.
